"Like Butter.”

Butcher Shoppe sources our whole chickens from local Ontario farms. Always all natural. Always free-range and hormone free. These whole chickens are air-chilled, helping them to retain their beautiful colour and natural flavour—without paying for any extra water weight like you do with most water-chilled chickens. High in lean protein and very calorie efficient, these whole chickens are simply delicious. 3-4 lb avg.

Goes Great With...

You can’t go wrong with whole barbecue chicken, can you? We like to spin up a mixture of lemon juice, seasoning, and our favorite BBQ sauce to coat the chicken with before throwing it on a hot grill.

Our Preferred Preparation

So many options here. You can cook Butcher Shoppe chickens whole on the barbecue or stuffed in a roast, or break them down into individual pieces. We recommend rubbing your chicken down with butter before seasoning it with salt, pepper, and herbs. And don’t forget to make a nice chicken stock with the leftover bones and trimmings!

How It Ships

Our whole chickens are hand prepared to order before they’re immediately sent to your door on our own fleet of refrigerated trucks within 12-24 hours of your order.

Chicken breasts are the pectoral muscles of a chicken, of which there are two. It’s an excellent source of lean protein that’s easy to prepare and suitable for a wide variety of dishes. Next to chicken wings, chicken breast is one of the most commonly purchased proteins in the United States.

Glad you asked! Our chicken breast is sourced from local Ontario chicken farms without exception.

Prepare or freeze your Butcher Shoppe chicken breasts within five days of receiving them. You don’t need to wash raw chicken breast! This will only spread juices to other surfaces. Instead, wash hands before handling and use a separate cutting board for your raw chicken protein. Otherwise, the key is to avoid drying the chicken breast out during cooking.

Chicken breast is the health nut’s choice for a reason: a four-ounce serving contains just about 100 calories and almost two dozen grams of protein. It’s lean, it’s healthy, and it’s incredibly easy to make.

On the Grill

Grillmasters love to boast their own proprietary grilled chicken recipes. We like to keep it simple. Throw together your favorite marinade in a ziploc bag—say, oil, vinegar, honey, mustard, and lemon juice?—add your chicken breasts, and let it sit for a couple of hours. Once the grill is hot, give it a couple minutes on each side and bingo.

Using a Broiler

Get your broiler going on high. Slice your chicken breasts in half (lengthwise) before rubbing them down with olive oil, salt, pepper, and a cajun spice mix of your choosing. Place your chicken breasts on the rack and broil them 4-5 minutes on each side.

In a Pan

We like to pat the chicken breast dry, then coat it in a mix of flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Then we heat a generous drizzle of oil in a pan on medium heat before searing the protein 4-5 minutes on each side.

We source much of our meat locally, however we do source some of the best products that other countries have to offer.

Wagyu is simply any of the original breeds of Japanese cattle. Meat cut from these animals is known for its intense marbling, high quality, and rich flavor. Kobe beef is a very particular strain of Wagyu called Tajima-Gyu that is raised to strict standards in the Hyogo Prefecture. Kobe is the capital city of Hyogo, thus the name.

We recommend that you prepare or freeze your Butcher Shoppe order within five days of receiving it. Most meat will hold in a deep freeze for up to a year. For best practices around meat handling, see Safe food handling in the home from Canada.ca.

Absolutely. Most of our cuts of meat can be prepared in a large pan, preferably a cast-iron skillet, on high heat. The trick is to season meat appropriately and use the right temperature to achieve that nice crusty sear on the outside. Some of our product pages include recommendations on preparation, including instructions for preparing meat on the stove.

Next-day delivery is free for orders over $250!
